Monthly Goals - July 2015

Been inspired by Instagram to set myself some monthly goals! Here's my three goals for July! Let's see how I go!

Away in July and August so want some extra lbs in the bank to cover the additional wine that will be consumed! Need to get the exercise levels back up too as I've been slacking a bit so cycling to work will help that and save some money on petrol! Need a push to try something new as well as I can sometimes play it safe and eat the same things over and over!

It will do the control freak in me good to have new targets lol

Favourite Salmon

Roast salmon baked with piri piri and honey, salad and cold pasta. Stuffed! No one else eats salmon in our house so I eat both bits! ❤️ Slimming World! I probably use a couple of tablespoons of honey but most of it runs off and burns so I usually count a couple of Syns for that, and three for the mayonnaise.

Cherry Muller, Grapes and Apple

Early Morning Shopping Fruit, Yogurt and Short Shorts!

Been umming and ahhing about these short shorts for a few days! I go in Sainsburys a lot lol and keep picking them up and putting them back!

This morning I decided I needed fruit and yogurt as it's going to be hot I'm thinking I might not fancy my usual lunch of spicy tomato mugshot! Decided to pick the shorts up too and stop fannying about! Got them with my nectar points so effectively free 😝

Monday Weigh Day

So that could have been a lot worse! A pound on taking me back to target exactly! Back on plan now looking to get a couple of pounds off to be five below target! We have a couple of short breaks coming up over the next couple of months so I'll be needing the leeway!

Bleugh

Feeling sluggish! Ate too much crap yesterday, shouldn't have had the leftover wine, or so much of the leftover food, or the four biscuits which found their way into my gob! Home weigh in suggests not too much damage done but I feel bloated and crappy! Roll on tomorrow a day on plan properly should sort me out!

Uh Oh Danger Food In The House

Been away this weekend, and while food shopping Saturday for a BBQ some coleslaw jumped into my basket! This has meant coleslaw dinner Saturday, coleslaw breakfast this morning and another coleslaw dinner tonight! Thinking the scales are not going to take kindly to this tomorrow!

Tonight's dinner was leftover tandoori chicken and an Iceland kangaroo burger with laughing cow light blue cheese, and coleslaw!

With leftover wine!

How the order you eat your food affects your health......

Interesting article here ......

How the order you eat your food affects your health: Eating protein and veg BEFORE carbs makes you fuller for longer and could help diabetics control their blood sugar.

Now, however, scientists say it's the order in which we eat food that is key, rather than eliminating key food groups.
Starting a meal by eating vegetables and protein, and finishing it with carbohydrates, keeps us fuller than if we ate the same foods in the reverse order.
This is because protein slows down the release of sugar from carbohydrates into the blood stream, preventing a sugar 'high' and then crash - and hunger pangs.

Liberation From Be Perfect

Many years ago I went on one of those training courses that you get sent on by work every now and again and found out something about myself that I didn’t know. Usually it’s the same old buff in these things going over things you already know, but I came out of this one with a new insight into myself that I’ve tried to keep a check on ever since. One of the exercises was multiple choice personality
questionnaire, I came out at the end of it as a “Neurotic Be Perfect”. I not only want things doing, doing right, and perfectly I want them done my way, or the way I would do them. It was 100% true and I’ve taken that on board ever since and always try to ask myself will the result be the same if it’s done differently, someone else’s way. If the answer is yes then chill out and let them get on with it!

This overspills in to my personality in general. Whatever I’m doing I like to be as perfect as I can at it, whether that’s dieting, exercising or whatever. That’s why I think when I’ve done any kind of diet before I get veryfocused and rarely have a week where I put on, and have never had a huge gain whilst on my journey to target. Great, you might think, and in a way it is, but it also set me up to fail when the journey is over and target is reached. If I had more gains and struggles along the way it might just help the learning curve and make me better able to cope with the ups and downs when at target. What generally tends to happen is that as soon as I fall off the “Be Perfect” bandwagon I struggle to get back on, once the “Perfect” is broken it’s hard to fix. I need to let go a little and not feel such a failure when gains happen, as they will surely do.

6 Months Untill Christmas ......

Which means party frock season! I was reminded yesterday on our group Facebook page that it was 6 months until Christmas Eve! Although I spoke about the butter & coleslaw fest I will be having, that is planned for the day, and boxing day....and however long it lasts till it goes off or gets chucked out after that..... before Christmas means parties, work do's dressing up and going out all poshed up! I'm determined this year to be at target still and be able to splash out on something new and glam to wear! I know we are six months away but keeping these things in mind can help me to focus and try not to go off plan between now and then!

Love Your Freezer

Brilliant article here from the Hello Healthy blog about freezing stuff! I use my freezer loads now and quite often batch cook stuff, portion it up and shove some in the freezer. I also use frozen fruit quite a lot as love the fruit juice you get when it thaws.

Total 0% yogurt with  sweetener, chocolate Hi-Lights Bourneville flavour with frozen blueberries and strawberries.

Quark with sweetener, lemon flavouring, frozen blueberries, strawberries and mango with a crushed meringue nest.

Making The Most Of Your Calories

Before starting Slimming World I would have said I was quite clued up with dieting, I’ve tried just about everything going at one point or another from Weight Watchers, to Atkins, Cabbage Soup, Low GI, Slim Fast, counting calories .....and so on and so forth. I guess I would have been right I knew a lot about diets and what you needed to do on them in order to lose weight. What I didn’t really understand was nutrition. I could count calories, work out points or just not eat all together and drink milkshakes! What I’ve learnt at Slimming World is how to make the most of the calories I consume. At the end of the day losing weight is a simple calculation of calories in versus calories out. That’s looking at it very basically as there are so many other factors to take into account but the basics are, eat less calories than you burn to lose weight.

Before I started Slimming World I was using My Fitness Pal to log and count calories in and log exercise as calories out which was a success and I did lose weight. But as I wasn’t really making the most of my calories I was often hungry, or going over calorie budget with wine at the weekends. When I started Slimming World the first time I went for it, I ate a big Slimming World fry ups for breakfast, huge salads for lunch and enormous dinners. I lost 3 1⁄2 lb the first week and was amazed! After the first week I decided to add my food into My Fitness Pal just out of curiosity and was amazed to have come in under the normal amount of calories I’d have usually eaten whilst eating twice as much and not going hungry. Food Optimising gives you a really easy way of controlling the amount of calories you eat without really having to weigh or measure very much at all. Simple changes from lean mince to extra lean mince, removing the fat from meat and using things like Frylight made so much more of a difference calorie wise than I’d have thought. As I settled into the Slimming World plan a bit more I’ve reduced the amount I eat naturally and fit back in with my normal eating routine. The novelty of a big English breakfast has worn off, I don’t really have the time or inclination to do this every day. I rely quite heavily on my staple lunch of Mug Shots Monday to Friday with a piece of fruit and/or a Muller Light yogurt as these are easy, quick and filling. Spicy Tomato is my favourite of the moment. Some Mugshots are free and some are Synned so check these out also beware of the ones you get in poundshops etc. as they are sometimes Synned too, even if the same flavour supermarket ones are free. I found the visual below for Synning Mugshots.

Anyway I digress, I’ve found I’ve settled into a more normal pattern of eating for me which fits my appetite and daily routine. I’ve also found I’m naturally starting to eat less and could eat even less if I think consciously about the meal I’m preparing. I still have a tendency to overfill my plate, and a tendency to not want to leave anything but I’m gradually learning to gauge what’s on my plate with what will satisfy my appetite. But even if I do eat more than I really need to I feel safe that it’s not going to result in a big gain on the scales as long as I’m sticking to plan.

Thai 7 Spice Tuna Sandwich and Salad

Love tuna! I buy the frozen tuna steaks in Iceland and bake them in the oven for about 20 minutes, then rest for 5 minutes or so. My husband also had tuna tonight with chips and garlic vegetables so I made a separate foil compartment for his as he doesn't do spicy! Mine were sprayed with frylight and covered with Schwartz Thai 7 spice, his were plain with spray oil.

Tandoori Chicken From The Freezer

Tonight's dinner was Tandoori Chicken I made a couple of weeks ago and cooked, chopped and froze. The idea was to use the foil container and re-heat in the oven but I was strapped for time so pinged it in the microwave. Very impressed came out lovely! With salad and Synned mayonnaise.

I started off using the low fat mayonnaise when I first started Slimming World but I don't really like the taste so I gradually ended up moving back onto the real thing. I've started buying the squeezy bottles as although they're more expensive they make it easier to just drizzle a bit over the top of your dinner.I usually count two or three Syns depending on how much I squeeze over!

Inspiration On Maintaining - Maintaining Control

A bit like Image Therapy I like to have a good old nose round the internet to find inspiration from other people who have got to target, I came across this post which I really related to.....

A Matter Of Choice - staying in the "safe zone"

Good to know I'm not the only one! It feels a bit lame sometimes moaning about how scary and hard it is when you hit target, when there's people who are still on their journey. The group I go to in Englefield Green has been going for six months now and we have quite a few people hitting target now which is great and it's brilliant to have the support of people who have been there for a few weeks/months and those just getting there, but it is a bit scary!

For me it's all about being in control. When I'm losing and on plan with a target in sight I'm committed, I know what I need to do and I do it. When you get to target a little bit of you wants to be that "normal" person who can go out for dinner, pick the three courses that they really want to eat and enjoy them without losing that element of control and sliding back into bad habits. It's like releasing the control and then being able to grab it back again so you don't go off the rails. I've spent twenty odd years yo-yoing back and forth between a size 8 and 18 (probably verging on a 20 if I'm honest) and now I'm here again back at target the thought of going back and losing that control is scary.

So far I have on some days upped a Healthy Extra B and on others upped the wine intake and so far five weeks in I'm doing OK, but I don't feel like I've had a real test yet, there's been no situation whereby I have had to or want to release the control and have a day or a meal completely off plan. I know this is creeping up and will happen at some point so perhaps I should stop worrying about it now and deal with it when it happens? Maybe I should plan one in and just get the waiting over and done with?

I'm following Fopperholic and Lauren Wallis who both seem to do this really well, they often post about their off plan meals, days or weekends and seem really focused and determined not to let these over run into days and weeks and months so it's great inspiration, and brilliant to see how they get their heads around it, and get straight back on plan.

I guess it all comes with practice. So for now I'm just going along on plan with the combination of extra HEXB's and wine and I'll let you know when the first off plan instance arises....and if I can manage to deal with it successfully! I'm not going to start introducing the "Danger Foods" back in on a regular basis, although I am looking forward to a buttery, coleslawey Christmas with a few chocolate hob nobs.

Five weeks within target so far, I'm not sure how other members balance it but I'm aiming to generally maintain at 8st 12lb giving me room to play for those off plan moments!

Tassimo Latte

My cup of morning loveliness 5 1/2 Syns I call it 6 for the chocolate sprinkles! High in Syns but worth it for me!

Weigh in and Slimming World Burger Fest

Tonight was weigh in, managed to stay the same which is 1lb under target. Plan is to weigh in around 2lb below most of the time giving me 5lb to play up with! I currently weigh 8st 13lb

Last two evenings dinners have been burgers! I love a burger! Sunday was a Slimming World Iceland quarter pounder with bacon and laughing cow light blue cheese for 1 1/2 syns! These are great in a burger! With salad and cauliflower couscous. As usual a couple of Syns of mayonnaise, wholemeal thin for HEXB!

Tonight was the Thai Chicken burger. Managed to squeeze a bit of speed food in there! Syns for mayonnaise, wholemeal thin for HEXB.

Slimming World Chicken Kebabs

Tonight's dinner was Fajita chicken kebabs mad with Schwartz Fajita seasoning with salad and cauliflower couscous. I baked the cauliflower couscous in the oven as I like a bit of colour on it and seasoned it with parsley chilli and garlic, with a bit of schwartz jerk seasoning.

Slimming World Quorn Scotch Eggs

I used this recipe but just changed the pork and bacon for Quorn mince. I liked these better than the meat ones!

Slimming World Sausage Rolls

I made these a while back and they are really nice but better warm fresh from the oven. Make up smash to a thicker consistency than normal and roll out between a couple of pieces of clingfilm and wrap round a sausage. Sprinkle over some herbs, salt and pepper. Spray with Frylight and bake in the oven until browned. I used Linda McCartney red onion and rosemary ones as they are free and lovely!

I'm pretty sure they are considered a "Tweak" as you're using the free smash in a way it's not normally intended. However I tend to take a practical view of Tweaks and if I was having this as as part of a main meal I'd not consider it a Tweak. If, for example, I was eating them or something like the lasagna Doritos as a snack between meals I'd syn them as a Tweak.

Tweaks can be a bit difficult to get your head round a first but the picture below should help! If in doubt assume it's a Tweak and Syn it. That way you're protecting yourself from a gain.

What To Expect From a Slimming World Group

I can remember putting off joining for quite a long time. My friend who is now my consultant too, was doing really well and I wasn't to be honest. I'd been using My Fitness Pal to log calories and was losing weight but didn't have the nutritional knowledge to make the most from my calories, so was sometimes hungry or using ingredients which I could have tweaked a bit and got more out of. Everything was weighed and measured making it hard work.

After months of trying to persuade me to give it a go I gave in, and now wished I'd done it so much sooner.

When you first come to group you will be given a talk by your consultant which lasts about half an hour, they will go through the basics of the plan, tell you all about Food Optimising and get you to fill out a registration form. Consultants will tell you about their journey and then you will be invited to stay to group, or Image Therapy. At the end of this you will go and pay and register and then your consultant will weigh you and answer any questions. You will be given a PIN code to log onto Lifeline Online which is the Slimming World website full of recipes, articles and helpful advice. There sill be a shop where you can buy the latest magazine, recipe books, HiFi bars etc and we have tea and coffee which is free. This is paid for by the weekly raffle which is drawn at the end of Image Therapy. The raffle prize might be the ingredients to make a recipe, or something useful like a lunch box or cool bag. The consultant will also award Slimmer of the Week which is the person who has lost the most weight, and has lost the previous week. Everyone brings something free or low syn to put in the Slimmer of the Week basket for the winner to take home.

If you can always try and stay for Image Therapy as it's so helpful. It can be a bit daunting at first. The consultant will give a little talk about any events coming up, ours tells us what is featured on Lifeline Online. They then go round the room and speak to everyone about how they have done that week. Your weight will always remain private and confidential but the consultant will talk about whether you had a loss, gain or stayed the same that week. I used to dread it to be honest, I'm not great at speaking in front of a crowd and even less so if it's not been a good week and there's been a gain. However, stick with it as it is something you get used to and overcome as the weeks go by. As you get to know people in your group it becomes much easier. I've seen new members join who quite obviously find it uncomfortable at first really come out of their shell and open up over the weeks. If you've had a good week it's great to be able to share any tips on how you did it, and if you've had a bad week or a struggle with something there is always someone there who can give you some helpful advice and support. Our Image therapy is great as it's opened up a lot to the group so everyone gets as involved as they want to. You will never be forced to join in but from what I've seen most people join in at their own pace, and remember everyone is there for the same reason.

I read this article recently which really made me think about how I view Image Therapy.

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

This is one of the lines in the article and I thought if I view Group as one of those five the I can really make a difference. The other thing that struck me was this part.....

"I would talk about them [choices] with my new friends; they would ask me about how I was doing; and I could see how well these healthier choices were working for them. It was like I was cheating, but it was just self-efficacy. It was just learning a new normal.”

Old habits are so hard to break and it's so easy to slip back into them but I've found that even the year or so between Slimming World groups where I didn't go some of the Food Optimising habits stuck. I used frylight, I still bought 5% mince and removed the fat from meat. Yes I ate too much bread, and synned foods but the basics stuck and became a new normal.

If you are thinking of joining but are feeling nervous about joining a group then take a deep breath and give it a go, what's the worst that could happen?

Leftovers Dinner

Tonight's dinner is brought to you by last nights leftovers. The Maggi So Juicy chicken in a wholemeal roll, HEXB, with a reduced fat cheese single 2 Syns, salad, and Slimming World chips. Usual mayonnaise applied! Last night I had a chicken leg, tonight it was part of the leftover breast meat which was delicious. I still have a leg and a whole breast left so that's done three dinners last night and one tonight, still with plenty to go!

Quick and Easy Recipes

One of my favorites is poached eggs. Quick and easy and I use the silicone molds as they never turn out right just in the pan of water. These are on Linda McCartney Red Onion and Rosemary Sausages, rocket, tomato and just right at the bottom you can see a wholemeal thin which was my HEXB (Healthy Extra B) option for the day. Syn Free deliciousness!

Tuna Steaks. These are from Iceland and are the frozen steaks. They only take about 20 minutes in the oven and I usually have two. Here with one on salad and one in a wholemeal thin. I sprinkle Schwartz Thai 7 Spice on them and spray with Frylight before shoving in the oven.

Tandoori Salmon, salad and Slimming World chips. Another shove in the oven and leave to cook one! Click here for the details on the Tandoori mix!

Feeders

A topic that came up at Image Therapy recently was people who, without asking, plonk a bit of cake
etc. down with your cup of tea. You’re then faced with a really difficult situation and could end up
eating something you don’t really want using valuable Syns on something just because you don’t
want to appear rude. I always remember the advice of a friend about twenty years ago who said
they used a tactic when faced with something that had the prospect of taking them off plan and
that’s “I will have it, just not now” I can clearly remember using it at Easter once, years ago, when the boss
brought in Cadburys Crème Eggs for everyone. I didn’t really want use my points (Weight Watchers
at the time) on it but didn’t want to appear rude so said Thank you I’ll have that later! It sat in my
drawer for weeks until I really wanted it. I wasn’t denying myself it, just choosing not to eat it there
and then and sabotage my weight loss. When I eventually ate it I really enjoyed it! Similarly recently I
had two Cadbury’s Crunchies in my top cupboard I’d been given about four months ago, which I’d
saved for when I got to target, they were delicious when I eventually ate them.

I’ve also used this at work, although if I’m honest my colleagues (mostly) are great and don't try and
force cakes and biscuits on me. They have learnt over time if I say no I mean no. They will often now suggest I take a cake home for my son, which I have done in the past.

It can be difficult, I think you can sometimes end up feeling apologetic and embarrassed even by
refusing treats from family, friend and colleagues. If someone who is just a healthy eater refuses
chocolate goodies they are rarely cajoled or pestered to have one but the fact you’re on a “diet”
sometimes makes some people think they have the right to try and pressure you into eating something
you’d rather not. Slimming World doesn’t have banned food, so if you’re offered a treat and you want
it, then  Syn it and enjoy. If, however, you’d rather not then don’t feel embarrassed to say no, to ask
people not to automatically plonk cake down with your cuppa, or not to bang on relentlessly that
one chocolate chip muffin wont hurt! I find when my head is in the right place I don’t even want
those things really. I could have one, but that would be in place of a nice glass of wine with dinner,
or the Syns I’d planned into that evenings meal. It’s all about choices, and I’d chose wine over
chocolate cake just about 99% of the time.

So if you feel awkward about saying no, or asking people not to just give you stuff without asking
give the “I will have it, just not now.” method a go! “Thanks, I’ll have that later” means there’s no
immediate moaning at you for not eating it, you can save it for later. If it’s perishable you can always
take it home for someone in the family who might enjoy it! “I’ll really enjoy that after my dinner
tonight when I’ve got a sweet tooth, thanks” I’ve even just taken things home in the past and binned
them rather than just say no. The first few times it happens can be difficult and you feel like you have to explain or justify yourself. The more you do it the more of a natural response it becomes and people will offer you treats but not pester you if you refuse. Have the confidence in yourself to say no if you don't want it, or Syn it in if you do. It's your choice.

Never be afraid to stand up for yourself, they soon get the message if you stand firm! It’s your choice, your body and your weight loss! xxx

Maggi So Juicy Roasting Bag Chicken

I thought I’d have a bit of an experiment with dinner last night. Wednesday is my Body Pump class and it’s always such a rush getting in, bathed and then getting dinner ready. I’ve seen the adverts for the Maggi So Juicy roasting bags and looked them up on the Slimming World App. The Rosemary and Garlic ones are 5 ½ Syns each.

They say they are for a small chicken but I’d bought a large one. Deciding that if it was roasting in a bag it wouldn’t need its skin on I removed the skin along with the wings, as no one eats them in our house anyway. I also removed the little bits on the end of the legs and it fitted into the bag no problem. I added a lemon chopped into quarters to the cavity and sprinkled over the seasoning. I then chopped my salad and part roasted some Slimming World Chips all ready to finish cooking when I got in. The chicken went in the oven just before I left for Body Pump and when I got home before I jumped in the bath I popped the chips back in.

I have to say I was super impressed with the results. The chicken was in fact “So Juicy” and perfectly cooked. The flavour was lovely, and I reckon I’ll get at least 5 portions from the whole thing so 1 and a smidge Syns per portion.

Danger Foods

I have a list of Danger Foods, these are foods that if I have in the house I can’t leave alone, so in general I don’t buy them. I have four foods, two pretty obvious ones and two maybe not so.

1. Butter

If I have this in the house I use it. I generally buy spread which doesn’t bother me but butter makes me want to eat bread, not just any bread but uncut white bread, baguettes, ciabatta and toast! In our house if there’s uncut bread of any type it’s usually me who eats it, my family prefer a sliced loaf. So if there’s butter, there’s bread that only I eat, and it would be rude not to eat it before it went stale!! If it’s not there I don’t miss it, or crave it but if it’s there I’d eat it! I always buy a couple of packs of butter at Christmas as a treat, and occasionally if we are having a BBQ or special occasion I’ll get a small tub of Lurpak.

2. Chocolate Hob Nobs / Digestives

A relatively obvious one, but I can never just stop at one of these. Once the packet is open I don’t stop till they are gone or I feel sick! I recently had my gallbladder removed and got through a whole large packet in about a day and a half! Post operative treat, nice but not good for the waistline.

3. Coleslaw
Not just any coleslaw, it has to be at number one Waitrose and number two Tesco. Again a food I just can’t leave alone and I’m the only one in the house who eats it really. Therefore it’s down to me to be a trouper and not let any go to waste. On top of this I refer back to number one as there’s nothing I love more than a big chunk of freshly baked uncut bread with butter and coleslaw. I also love coleslaw on toast, with salad, in a burger, in a sandwich or just a spoonful on its own whilst making any of the above. It might not seem like a particularly bad one as it’s easy enough to Syn and easily accommodated within your 5 to 15 Syns a day. But, as I find it hard to leave alone I only buy this occasionally. Fortunately I do most of my shopping online at Sainsbury’s (whose coleslaw comes in at number three) so I’m not often tempted to buy some. If I am making a trip to Tesco I am usually able to resist, Waitrose comes in a bit harder especially as the small pot only comes with one of those annoying peel back lids, and the big pot comes with a proper clip on plastic lid!

4. Hi Fi Bars

Again maybe not an obvious one? But so delicious and easy to pick up and eat before you’ve even realised what’s happened! If they’re not in the house I don’t miss them, but if they’re there I’m constantly wanting one or two for breakfast, then I get home in the afternoon and usually have a coffee, which immediately makes me want a Hi Fi to go with it. The later in the evening after dinner, another coffee, another Hi Fi craving. I buy these every few months or so as a treat I can’t buy them every week any more as I scoff the lot in about two days. Hi Fi treat at the moment is the Slimming World Lemon Merengue Hi Fi Lights. Syns each or two for a HEXB.
